Pens are boring. So is adulthood, much of the time. As children, the crayon offered many colors with which to express ourselves, and even encouraged drawing and free association. At some point, crayons gave way to pens, which soon begat taxes, celll phone bills, and Robert's Rules of Order. We never should have put down the crayon.
And so, starting January 1st, anything that requires handwritten notes or signatures will be written in crayon. Bic and Write Brothers will soon be replaced by Sienna Red, Cirrulian Blue, and Navajo Orange.
It's impossible to take anything written in crayon too seriously. A year of writing only in crayon when handwritten notes are necessary should help counteract the seriousness of an adult life by interjecting a little more playfulness and whimsy into life.
It's also going to be a good exercise in sticking to a conviction in the face of adversity. Workplaces, restaurants, and car dealerships probably won't be too keen on offfical documents signed in crayon. Giving up adult writing utenils might just be harder than quitting smoking.
This site will chronicle my year-long experience and issues involved with the project. It will include lots of photos, stories, and other things heretofore unforseen at this stage of the project.
2012 will be the year of the crayon.
